What is
ASP?
ASP is an abbreviation for Active
Server Pages. A specification that enables web pages to be
dynamically created using HTML, scripts, and reusable
ActiveX server components. ActiveX are
software components from
Microsoft. They enable sound, Java applets and animations to
be integrated in a Web page.
What is
ASP.net?
ASP.net is an extension of ASP
which allows the user more flexibility in applications while simplifying
the code used to create the applications.
Is
it important for your web host to support ASP and ASP.net?
If you're not familiar with ASP
and ASP.net then you will most likely not need your web host to support
it. Dynamic functions can easily be created on your website with PHP and
CGI which is supported by just about every web host. If ASP makes big
gains in popularity then it will be supported by more web hosts. We
don't think that most people should be concerned if their web hosting
plan supports ASP.
Do most web
hosting companies support ASP?
Not all web hosting companies support
ASP & ASP.net web hosting, but some do and if you need
ASP support we would like
to help make your decision on a web host easier. As you've
probably noticed, it does cost more money for ASP and ASP.net
supported web hosting plans than it costs for a typical shared
hosting plans.
However, it doesn't have to cost much
more for ASP and ASP.net support. Some web hosting companies
will charge a premium of as much as 300% for ASP and ASP.net
support compared to similar shared hosting plans
that don't support ASP and ASP.net.
Not all companies charge such a premium
for ASP and ASP.net support. There are a handful of excellent
web hosts that offer ASP and ASP.net for around $10/month.
Some companies
support ASP on Linux servers while some others use Windows
Servers. ASP.net on the other hand will not run on a Linux
server and if you need ASP.net support then you will need a
web host with Windows servers.
If you need Windows servers
be sure to check that the web host you're looking at has
them. There are quite a few web hosting companies that offer
ASP support on Linux servers and it's a common misconception
that these web hosts run Windows servers. Keep in mind
though that a host with a Linux server that supports
ASP can run all of your ASP code as well as a Windows
server. In addition, it is widely claimed that Linux servers
have better security because Windows servers are often
attacked by hackers.
What is
Chilisoft ASP?
Chilisoft ASP is software that allows
Linux servers to support ASP. Keep in mind that Chilisoft doesn't allow
Linux servers to support ASP.net. If you need ASP.net support then you
will need to find a host with Windows servers.

support. We didn't do a full
review of EasyCGI, but we did do some research into the general
customer satisfaction of EasyCGI customers and found that most

HostExcellence offers ASP and ASP.net support on their Windows
servers with all of their web hosting plans. It is an extra
$5/month for ASP and ASP.net support above the price of their
regular hosting plan. For small
personal websites we recommend HostExcellence's starter plan at
$2.95/month, but when you add the extra $5 for ASP and ASP.net
support you still have the same $2.95/month web hosting plan
that doesn't allow for a heck of a lot of storage or bandwidth.
Most webmasters who need a Windows host
are running a business and not a small personal site. For a
business scale site you would really need to upgrade to the
$9.95/month plan which would really be $14.95/month when you add
the $5 for ASP and ASP.net support, and if you're going to pay
that much for a Windows server we think that Midphase's offer of
$14.95/month with unlimited domains is a better deal. |
