Building and Hosting Landing Pages

Landing pages or doorway pages as their sometimes called are small websites usually meant to briefly presell a product and send the user to another website. These types of pages have become even more popular recently in internet marketing because of the rules put in place by Google Adwords, a popular advertising medium. This Google Adwords rule is that the same url can only show up once for the same keyword search. So if the same 10 advertisers are all promoting the same url for the same keyword, only one of the advertiser's ads will show up. For the other 9 advertisers, this presents a problem because they are now unable to advertise.

This is where landing pages become necessary. Lets say that one of the 9 advertisers that is currently not driving any traffic because his ads aren't showing up decides to build a landing page. Now, with a landing page that has a unique url the advertiser is getting traffic again. Without the landing page, it would not be possible for that advertiser to get any traffic, but with it the advertiser can have his/her ads shown as much as possible. This is no secret, and ever since Google created their rule in early 2005 landing pages have become not only more popular, but necessary for survival.

Landing pages were already popular before Google Adwords made it's rule changes. Businesses like to create several different entries to their main site in order to cater to the various niches in their market. For example, if you have a mortgage application website and one of the niches in your market is fixed 15 year loans then you could create a separate landing page addressing that niche and through that page you can send your visitors to your home page.

There are a couple ways that we know are used by advertisers to host their landing pages. Some advertisers purchase a general domain such as widgetsupplies.com. Then inside of their hosting account they create lots of different subdomains such as bluewidgets.widgetsupplies.com, redwidgets.widgetsupplies.com, bigwidgets.widgetsupplies.com, etc.... This method is effective on some level because what you're selling, "bluewidgets", "redwidgets", or "bigwidgets" is in the domain. The idea is that if the name of what your selling is related to your domain then people are more likely to click on your link, and with Google Adwords that is a very important point because advertisers are rewarded with lower costs when their ads are more relevant and a higher percentage of people click on them.

A better way to do landing pages is to have a separate domain for each landing page. This allows you to really maximize your domain's relevancy to what you're selling, and like I said relevancy is rewarded by Google. A separate domain also adds to your credibility with customers which will result in better conversion rates and more sales.

Hosting Your Landing Pages

The problem with having a separate domain for each landing page is usually web hosting cost. Most web hosting providers only allow one or two domains in each web hosting account. With the VERY small size of landing pages, you could theoretically fit A LOT of landing pages in each web hosting account. However, if your web hosting provider doesn't allow you to do that, then you're limited in how many domains that you can host for the price of one web hosting account and consequently, you don't really get your money's worth for your web hosting.

This is where Hostgator comes in. Hostgator provides a perfect solution for landing pages because they allow you to host unlimited domains in all of their web hosting accounts starting with the $9.95/month account. Obviously, you won't be able to fit an unlimited number of domains in a limited amount of space, but you will be able to get the most for your money, and if you're using landing pages you will be able to fit A LOT of landing pages in a Hostgator account for only $9.95/month. You can read more about Hostgator's offers in our Hostgator review.

You will also need to purchase all of your domain names that you use in your Hostgator account. It's a much better idea to purchase your domain from a company that specialized in domain registration than with a web hosting company. See our article about domain registration.

We have been using this method of a Hostgator web hosting account with unlimited domains along with purchasing domains from Godaddy for 6 months or so, and it has been working great. It really simplifies things and saves us a lot of money.

Building Your Landing Pages

Of course, you'll still need to build those landing pages and if you don't have a lot of experience, that can seem quite challenging. Please see our article about getting started online where we will give you some very useful information about how to go about building web pages.

We would like to wish you the best of luck in your internet endeavors,
